HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

My friend Anson has just noted that today is Uri Geller's birthday, his 49th.
(Geller is the former psychic superstar who says he invented spoon-bending. He
was famous in the 1970's.) As Anson suggests, we skeptics should thank Mr.
Geller for having brought us to our present state of organization and vigilance.
At one time he had scientists all over the world excited with the breakthrough
he appeared to represent, and though that euphoria has died down now, the
effects linger on. Spoon-benders, even kids, have leapt onto the stage to do
their turns, and with time have faded back into obscurity. Mr. Geller once
commented to an interviewer that some experts believe December the 20th to be
the real birth date of Jesus Christ, rather than the astronomical celebration
(winter solstice) that is closer to December 25th. That unsubtle suggestion was
not seized upon by the interviewer....

So, let's give credit where it's due! Here's to the man who consolidated the
skeptical movement and provided a fleeting inspiration to us all!

To stay in character myself, I say: Bah! Humbug! Feh! Phooey! And, a Merry
Xmas!
James Randi.
